10 Best Free & Open-Source Android Apps You Won't Find on Play Store (APK Download)

Some of the best Android apps are not on Google Play — either because they block ads, download YouTube videos, or simply because their developers publish only on GitHub and F-Droid. All apps below are free, open-source, ad-free, and our download links point to the developers' official GitHub releases.

1. NewPipe — YouTube without ads

NewPipe plays YouTube in a lightweight app with no ads, background playback, picture-in-picture and video/audio downloads. No Google account needed.

2. F-Droid — the open-source app store

F-Droid is an app store with thousands of free, open-source apps and automatic updates. Install it once and discover apps that respect your privacy.

3. Obtainium — auto-update apps from GitHub

If you install APKs from GitHub, Obtainium tracks each project and notifies you when a new release is out. It is the missing "update" button for sideloaded apps.

4. Aegis Authenticator — safer 2FA

Google Authenticator loses your codes when you change phones. Aegis keeps 2FA codes in an encrypted, exportable vault with fingerprint lock and backups.

5. KeePassDX — offline password manager

KeePassDX stores passwords in a KeePass database you fully control and fills logins in apps via Android Autofill. Pair it with KeePassXC on your PC. Prefer cloud sync? Bitwarden is open-source too.

6. Termux — a Linux terminal in your pocket

Termux gives you a full Linux environment: Python, Node.js, git, SSH and hundreds of packages — perfect for students learning programming.

Fossify Gallery is a fast, offline photo and video gallery with a built-in editor and locked folders. Its sibling Fossify File Manager is equally clean.

8. Organic Maps — offline maps for Pakistan

Organic Maps offers detailed offline maps with turn-by-turn navigation and zero tracking — ideal for northern-area trips with no signal.

9. LocalSend — share files without SHAREit

LocalSend transfers files between phones and PCs over Wi-Fi with encryption and no ads — a clean replacement for SHAREit and Xender.

10. AnkiDroid — flashcards for MDCAT, CSS and languages

AnkiDroid uses spaced repetition to help you memorise thousands of facts. Download shared decks or build your own and sync with Anki on desktop.

Honourable mentions

mpv and VLC for video, Element and Session for private messaging, Firefox with uBlock Origin for browsing, and Tor Browser for anonymity.

How to install an APK safely

  1. Download the APK from the app page (link goes to the official GitHub release).
  2. Open it from your notifications or Files app.
  3. Allow "Install unknown apps" for your browser when asked — this is a one-time step.
  4. Tap Install. Use Obtainium to get future updates automatically.
